During the dark, long nights of winter, when bitter winds sting my face as I traipse from bar to bar, I find it harder to stay energized late into the night—maybe it’s the season, or maybe it’s my age. That’s when I start craving a double-duty drink—something to warm me to my core and perk me up simultaneously. At J.O.B. Public House (319 E. Walnut St., Springfield, 417-831-1158), I found such a drink in the Tennessee Morning. Made with Brick + Mortar espresso, Buffalo Trace creme liqueur and a shot of whiskey and dusted with cinnamon, this drink is not messing around. It can be served hot or cold, but I highly recommend hot—the warming spice of the cinnamon evokes autumnal cider, and the assertiveness of the whiskey becomes comforting when hot, perfect for shaking off the chill. And if the shot of espresso doesn’t wake you up on a late night out, the bold slap of whiskey surely will.
