When I heard there was a new bar downtown where you could pour your own beer, I immediately gathered my closest friends and made a reservation. We headed to 417 Taphouse (431 S. Jefferson Ave., Ste. 160, 417-234-9224, 417tap.com) on a recent Friday, and we gathered in the Mother’s Brewing Company booth that features two taps with local brews Spiffy Britches Belgian IPA and Towhead American Blonde. No waiters come to you in this spacious bar; instead, guests trade their credit card for a Taphouse card, grab a frosty pint glass out of the freezer and pour as they wish. We started at the Mother’s booth, but quickly migrated to the pour-your-own wall holding around 15 other craft beers. You pay for your beer by the ounce—a perfect way to sample sips of new brews without committing.
