Our annual Best of 417 Readers’ Choice Awards voting starts today, and there are some tasty changes to this year’s contest. In an effort to simplify the contest and make voting easier, we're now focusing our Readers’ Choice Awards entirely on our biggest and most popular category: Food & Drink. Vote between now and September 30 for your favorite local spots, and the winners will be featured in the February 2021 issue of 417. Check out the 2020 winners here.
Date Lady’s Big Awards
Every year, the Specialty Food Association honors new and exciting specialty food products with their Sofi Awards, a contest judged by food industry experts that’s kind of like the Academy Awards of the food world. Springfield’s Date Lady came away with two awards this year. The first was a Best New Product award in the Barbecue and Hot Sauce category for the new Date Lady Barbecue Sauce. The second was a Bronze award in the Sweeteners category for the company’s original Date Lady Pure Date Syrup. Congrats on your sweet awards, Date Lady!
New Coffee in the Works
Longtime local developer Morris Dock is bringing his favorite Seattle coffee to Springfield in a new coffee shop, opening soon in downtown Springfield. The coffee shop is called Seattle Roast Coffee Shop, and it’s going into the space formerly occupied by the Bistro Market Starbucks at Walnut Street and South Avenue. It will serve Seattle Roast brand coffee. While the adjoining former grocery space does not yet have a new tenant, Dock said in a press release that his ideal tenant in the spot is another grocery market. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more!
Fresh Donuts on the Block
Yesterday, Republic-based S&L Donuts opened a location in Springfield, bringing freshly fried rings of joy to Glenstone Ave. The colorful donut counter has all the classic and creative varieties, and we can’t stop eying the chocolate long johns. The spot also serves savory breakfast options, like croissant sandwiches and kolaches, along with a selection of beverages like coffee drinks, smoothies, boba tea and more. A friend of the magazine and self-described donut connoisseur says these fried treats are the real deal. We can’t wait to try them!
Prairie Pie Goes Savory
This Saturday, Prairie Pie is hosting is a Pot Pie Pop Up, offering some more savory fillings inside their signature super-flaky butter crust. There will be chicken pot pies, veggie pot pies and beef-and-mushroom pot pies for sale, all of them ready-to-eat and sized just right for one person. Yum! The pop-up starts at 11:30 a.m. with products available for carry-out. Get there before they sell out.
