Housing a family of two adults, three kids and one dog, Michael and Katie Meek’s historic home is both timeless and functional. There is a back addition built in the 1980s by former owners and an upstairs addition commissioned four years ago by the Meeks themselves. As a result, the home’s layout provides a place for everyone.

The first floor features a formal dining room, formal living room, family room, office that doubles as a playroom, kitchen, butler’s pantry and powder bath. Katie says the separate living spaces were especially helpful during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order “It was nice to not be all on top of each other,” she says. “Mary Ellen could do her homework in the dining room, George could do his in the office and I could be somewhere else.”

Upstairs features four bedrooms, including the master bedroom. The Meeks worked with Adrian Rhoads, owner of Rhoads Design & Construction, to enhance its layout. Rhoads designed built-in cabinets, a laundry room and an additional bedroom. The home originally had a solarium room on this floor, but it lacked proper insulation, so they converted it to a bathroom.

Expert colonial-style architect Carl Mark designed this house. When you walk into the Meek residence, the first thing that catches your eye is a winding staircase. Built to last, it has helped transport adults and kids up to the second story countless times, and it also functions as the ideal spot to set up Hot Wheel tracks, according to the Meek children. “I love the older part of the house,” Michael says. “It’s got big windows, so it’s bright. It has great air circulation and traffic patterns.”
